Takashima Nobuyoshi, born in 1942, is a professor emeritus at the University of the Ryukyus, Japan, who has dedicated himself to shedding light on the atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army in Southeast Asia during World War II. He was a geography teacher at a high school in Yokohama in his early years, and after seeing the Malacca Monument. he began to study the history of the Japanese invasion of Southeast Asia in depth.
He began researching the atrocities committed by the Japanese Imperial Army in Southeast Asia since 1975 and continues this work to this day. The research has been primarily funded by his salary as a civil servant. He has devoted his personal savings to investigate the historical facts.
Professor Takashima launched the “Japan Peace Research Tour,” leading a Japanese Peace Delegation each year to World War II memorial sites in Malaysia and Singapore for study and reflection. During the journey, he and the members visit historical sites, seeking evidence of Japanese military atrocities. Each member is required to write a report at the end of the journey to share their insights and discoveries. As of 2023, the Peace Research Tour has been conducted 47 times, culminating in the publication of a collection of reports from these 47 journeys. His works include Malaysia and Singapore, documenting his observations and interactions at Southeast Asian war sites with Peace Delegation members, leaving valuable historical records for future generations. He hopes that the Japanese people, especially the younger generation, will witness these historical sites firsthand, understand the profound trauma the war inflicted on local communities, and ultimately encourage a greater commitment to peace.
