Lim Lian Geok

On December 18th, 1985, the former chairman of Jiao Zong (United Chinese School Teachers’ Association of Malaysia, UCSTAM) as well as the great educator, Mr. Lim Lian Geok passed away at the age of 85. Ten days after his death,  Jiao Zong, Dong Zong, together with 13 Chinese Associations came together to establish “LLG Cultural Development Centre”, in memory of Mr. Lim who made life-long contribution to Chinese Education.

LLG Cultural Development Centre in cooperation with Jiao Zong, United Chinese School Alumni Associations of Malaysia (UCSAAM) and Confucian Private Secondary School, in commemorating the 30th Anniversary of LLG Cultural Development Centre, is organizing the “Bracing 30 years of storm” cum Chinese Education Festival on 13th December 2015 (Sunday), scheduled at 1.00 pm at SJK (C) Chung Kwo, Jalan Loke Yew, Kuala Lumpur.

It is our utmost pleasure to invite people who are  involved in Chinese Education, to come together to cherish the memory of Lim Lian Geok and his achievements,  in our efforts  to promote the spirit of Mr. Lim Lian Geok as he believed in, “be neither intimidated by force, nor subdued by wealth”.

To show our care for the development of Chinese education and to show concern to our nation and help build up democracy, we should pass on the spirit of “prosperity in co-existence”, to let it crystalize and grow in Malaysia.

We would be greatly honoured if you/your association/school or institute/Organization will be able to grace our Chinese Education Festival 2015 series of activities with your presence.

The title of “迎风•而立” describes the spirit of LLG in facing stormy days or days of adversity. It is derived from Lim Lian Geok’s book “风雨十八年” (18 Stormy Years) after his citizenship was revoked. Since Mr Lim Lian Geok’s demise, Chinese Education in Malaysia is still facing a lot of problems. “风”also describes integrity of Mr Lim as a paragon of virtues. And he has left us a legacy of principals such as, “be neither intimidated by force, nor subdued by wealth”.

Confucius said: “At fifteen, I had my mind on learning; at thirty, I stood firm.” (The Analects: Wei Zheng/On Politics), and  the Confucian saying means that  by the time a person  reaches age thirty he would have  enough knowledge to stand firmly on his feet for and that nothing can sway them easily.

“迎风•而立” is the message brought about on the occasion of this 30th anniversary of LLG Cultural Development Centre, and we will continue to uphold the spirit of Mr. Lim Lian Geok, to embrace his spirit of mutual coexistence and joint prosperity, and continue to promote mother-tongue education and also to develop a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural and harmonious society.
