Children Photography Pilot Project Promoting Racial Harmony and National Unity will Begin in the State of Johor

In order to promote racial harmony and national unity and in conjunction with the Malaysia Day on September 16, Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM) together with six member organizations will organize a children photography project titled “My Home, My Country – Through the Eyes of Children” to collect photographs from children that capture the harmonious daily life of multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural society of Malaysia.

The project will kick start in the state of Johor as a pilot project and the organizers will be open to receive photographs from children with ages between 8-10 year old living in Johor from 15 September to 15 December 2016.

A public photography exhibition will be organized to exhibit the selected photographs from children in Johor will be held in Johor Bahru on 1-7 February 2017 in conjunction with the United Nations World Inter-Faith Harmony Week. The exhibition will then tour the 10 districts in the state of Johor.

Through this pilot project, the organizers hope that the richness of a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural society in Malaysia and that Malaysians from different backgrounds can live harmoniously together can be captured, promoted and celebrated by the children, their parents and the general public.

The organizers focus this project on children because they are the future of the country and it is important to encourage the appreciation of cultural diversity and national unity of all Malaysians from childhood.

The six member organizations of GBM that have formed the Johor Organizing Committee as co-organisers of this project are Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST), Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia, Tamil Foundation, LLG Cultural Development Center, ENGAGE and the Federation of Chinese Association Johor.

We call on the parents with children of ages between 8-10 years old living in Johor to participate in this project by encouraging their children to take pictures along the theme of “My Home, My Country” and submit them to the organisers. Each participant may submit maximum five photographs only and the works submitted must be of the children.

The photographs submitted must be of at least 6 megapixels in size or above. The photographs can be taken by camera or mobile phones. All photographs must be submitted to [email protected] before 17:00 hour on 15 December 2016.

A judging panel led by renowned Malaysian photographer, Eric Peris will select photographs for public exhibition.

All children participated in this project will be given a certification of participation. Children with their photographs selected for exhibition will be given book vouchers and free ticket to interesting and fun places of learning for children.
