Press Statement by LLG Cultural Development Centre on 3rd March 2020
LLG Cultural Development Centre, as a civic society of Malaysia, is very concerned with the political upheavals that have occurred recently in the country. We note that because Tan Sri Muhyiddin has not been able to prove conclusively that he has the support of more than half of the members of the Dewan Rakyat, there is now a political crisis which has not been resolved. A parliamentary session must therefore be convened soon so that a vote of confidence may be introduced against Tan Sri Muhyiddin to verify whether the National Alliance (Perikatan Nasional) enjoys the support of more than half the number of members of the Dewan Rakyat.
In the event that a session of the Dewan Rakyat is convened and that Tan Sri Muhyiddin fails to obtain the required confidence votes, His Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agung would re-appoint a new Prime Minister to form a new cabinet based on the wishes of the majority of the Dewan Rakyat.
It is the considered view of the LLG Cultural Development Centre that during the 2018 General Election the electorate had given the Pakatan Harapan (PH) their mandate to form a legitimate government. We are therefore opposed to any political manoeuvre resulting in the usurpation of the democratically elected PH government through the formation of a ‘back-door’ government, since this action violates the wishes and aspirations of the people.
Currently Malaysia is undergoing political transition and the process of the consolidation of democracy is not yet completed. It is a big set-back to democracy that the newly-elected PH government has been sabotaged. What is worse, the forces that participated together with Tan Sri Muhyiddin in the power usurpation include people with records of corruption and those who have been charged with criminal offences as well as conservatives and kleptocrats. The coming back of forces of conservatism and kleptocracy is detrimental to the progress of Malaysia’s positive political transformations during the past two years.
LLG Cultural Development Centre hereby appeals to the Dewan Rakyat to convene a special session to address the issue of confidence votes so that the current political crisis may be resolved based on the principles and the process of democracy. At the same time, we also appeal to political parties of all persuasions as well as all forces of democracy to help save our democracy by steadfastly holding on to the tenets of democracy in joint efforts to overcome the crisis in a resolute and rational manner.
